Dedicated Hosting Explanation
When we speak of web hosting servers, there are three principal kinds - shared web hosting web servers, VPS (virtual hosting servers) and dedicated hosting servers. Shared web hosting servers accommodate plenty of clients and hence the system resources per user account are limited, virtual private server accounts offer more configuration independence, but also influence other VPS servers on the hardware node if used rashly, and dedicated servers give you the option to perform everything you see fit without intervening with anyone else.
Why would you need a dedicated hosting server?
Dedicated servers are normally much more expensive than shared servers or VPS servers. Why would anyone, then, use them? The answer is very simple. If your company has a frequently visited web portal, or just has very explicit server architecture requirements, the most appropriate option would be a dedicated server. For somebody who is ready to invest in security and reliability, the greater price is of no concern. You get full root access and can use 100 percent of the dedicated hosting web server's system resources without anyone else using these resources and messing with your online portals.
Hardware specs
Most web hosting corporations, incl. us at Linux Hosts Inc., provide several different hardware architectures you can select from based on your requirements. The configurations include different varieties of processors, a different number of cores, different RAM and server hard disk drive sizes and different bandwidth usage quotas. You can choose a hosting Control Panel, which is a useful interface if you wish to use the server for website hosting purposes solely and prefer not to use a Secure Shell client for all the changes you will be making. We offer three sorts of Control Panel software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.
The web hosting CP of your preference
If you are a self-assured Linux OS user (our dedicated hosting web servers are powered by Linux or other Unix-based Operating Systems), you could manage your dedicated server via an SSH connection exclusively. That, however, could be inconvenient, particularly if you decide to grant complete server root access to somebody else who has less technical proficiency than yourself. This is why having web hosting CP software pre-activated is a good idea. The Hepsia web hosting CP interface that we provide does not include root-level access and is mainly suitable for someone who maintains a lot of web sites that require a lot of resources, but desires to administer the web portals, databases and e-mail aliases via an easy-to-use web hosting Control Panel. The DirectAdmin and cPanel Control Panels, on the other hand, grant root access and have 3 levels of access - root, reseller and user. If you intend to resell web hosting accounts rather than using the dedicated web hosting server only for yourself, you should select one of these two.
Server monitoring and backup services
Last but not least, there is the issue of monitoring the dedicated hosting server and of backing it up. In case of a problem with your hosting server, like a non-responsive Apache or an outage, it is good to have some sort of monitoring platform enabled. Here at Linux Hosts Inc. the system administrators monitor all dedicated servers for ping timeouts, and, if you have a Managed Services package, they monitor the separate services on the dedicated hosting server too. Backups are also an extra option - the web hosting supplier offers you data backups on our own backup servers. You could select a kind of RAID that would permit you to save the very same data on two hard drives as a protective measure in case of a server hard disk failure, or in case someone whom you have ranted full root privileges deletes something unintentionally.
